The ABCD – Association for Brazilian Bilingual Children’s Development – main objective is to assist Brazilian-Australian families and families of Portuguese-speaking children to conquer the challenges of bilingual upbringing in Australia.

The ABCD is a volunteer, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to the development of Portuguese-speaking bilingual children.

Its aim is to assist Brazilian-Australian families to conquer the challenges of a bilingual education.

The ABCD was born from the success of the first Brazilian Playgroup founded in Manly, NSW, Australia in 1999.

The ABCD counts with an advisory board of education, psychology and linguistics professionals as well as representatives of the Brazilian community in Australia.

What does the ABCD do?

The ABCD assists Sydney families with a Brazilian connection to achieve their dream of bringing up their children in a balanced and fulfilled bicultural environment. It does this through:

  • Teacher-led playgroup sessions for children aged 0 to 5
  • A bilingual pre-school program for children aged 2 to 5
  • Portuguese language classes for children of primary school age
  • Cultural and social events for Portuguese-speaking bilingual families

Who is behind ABCD?

The ABCD is made up of qualified Brazilian teachers and volunteers. It is an incorporated not-for-profit association.

It is run by an executive committee consisting of volunteers elected by members each year at the association’s AGM.

The ABCD’s doors area always open to the Brazilian community and to all who wish to share its aims and successes.
